Welcome to Veterinary Medical Referral Service!
Our mission is to provide quality consultations and specialty care to our referring veterinarians and patients. Our practice is limited to internal medicine by appointment. We provide consultation and treatment for patients with conditions such as renal (kidney) failure, liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders, anemia, and cancer. If you and your regular veterinarian suspect your pet has an internal medicine problem, please contact us for an appointment.
Our goal is to provide the very best care for your pet's internal medicine problems and get your pet's health back on track. When that point is reached, your pet's care will be transferred back to your regular veterinarian. We stay in constant communication with your veterinarian to keep them informed of your pet's progress.
We have a variety of specialized diagnostic procedures available to help with the evaluation of patients. These include ultrasound, blood pressure monitoring, and endoscopy (non-surgical examination of the intestinal, respiratory, vaginal or urinary tracts). Of course, routine diagnostic tests such as radiology and laboratory capabilities are also available.
Clinic hours for Veterinary Medical Referral Service are Monday through Thursday, and vary by day. Please call (253) 475-5301 to schedule your pet's appointment.
Veterinary Medical Referral Service has moved!
We are currently assisting patients out of a clinic in University Place, and are beginning the remodel on our new location in Tacoma. The slideshow below contains photos of the building before remodel. Check back to see our progress through the fall months! This is an exciting step for Dr. Comer and staff, and we'd like to share it with you! In the meantime, click here to get directions to our new location. Clinic phone and fax numbers remain unchanged.
Dr. Karen Comer is a board certified Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist. What does it mean to be "board certified"?
In addition to completing undergraduate training and four years of veterinary school, board certified specialists have completed an internship and residency in their specialized field (an additional 3-5 years training). In addition to this extensive training, a board certified internal medicine specialist must pass rigorous examinations to achieve board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). Specialists bring a greater understanding in the area of internal medicine, and have a greater knowledge of the unusual, the uncommon, or the rare in both large and small animals.
Please browse the ACVIM's page on Small Animal Internal Medicine here for more information on Dr. Comer's specialty.
